The Ways of Deep Water: Storytelling Workshop with Tracy Chipman,
Storyteller

Thursday, May 15th |  3 - 5 PM
at CORE Community Center
Suggested sliding scale donation: 0 to $35
Register by May 14th - HERE
Maximum 12 participants
Join local storyteller, author, and somatics practitioner Tracy Chipman for an emergent workshop exploring voice through storytelling. Coming together along the shores of Lake Superior, Tracy will guide you in working with the theme of the Ways of Deep Water through three threads: stories of Lake Superior, of longing, and experiences of fluidity (whatever that means to you). Participants will then craft a story from their lived experience. Tracy will encourage and support participants in developing and sharing their oral narratives. Possibilities for sharing include dyads, triads, or a group, with the intention of sharing a form of the story at a September 14th public Artists Reception (only for those who wish to share). Possibilities for sharing your work publicly include oral, audio recording, or transcription to a written form (which could be shared anonymously).

Portraiture is the art of representing the physical or psychological likeness of a real or imaginary individual. From earliest times the portrait has been considered a means to immortality. Portrait painting goes beyond simple documentation--it is the artist’s interpretation of the subject. Inspired by mirrors, participants will have fun as they learn basic portraiture concepts including proportion, color, shading and use of texture, line and shape. Participants may choose to show their work at a public Artists Reception at CORE Community Center on September 14th.

About Michèle
Michèle Coppin's mixed media paintings are painted on glass, in reverse, and sometimes backed with gold, silver, or copper leaf. Inspired by time, gardens, fabrics, and folklore, the subjects emerge from tangles of natural elements woven into color fields and threaded with decorative detail.  Michèle has exhibited regionally, nationally, and internationally.  She holds a BFA from The Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from Pratt Institute.
Born and raised in Belgium, exposed to the rich art history of northern Europe, Michèle Copin further developed her art through travels in Mexico and India in search of pure bright color.  She has had a particular focus on reversed painting, which goes back to antiquity, was known to the ancient Chinese, and has a long tradition in the folk arts of Eastern Europe and India.
An art therapist as well as a working artist, she has taught a diverse array of students, including kids and teens, seniors, cancer patients, and incarcerated women. Michèle is a part-time resident of Bayfield, Wisconsin. More about Michèle and her work.

Understanding the Plein Air Difference and Creating in Plein Air: a Two-Part Series with Rita Payne, Painter

Part 1: Tuesday, July 8th | 11 AM - 1 PM
at CORE Community Center
Suggested sliding scale donation 0 to $70
for the two-part series
Register by June 24th - HERE

Maximum 6 participants

Plein air painting adds a wonderful level of freedom to your artwork. The movement of paint and the benefit of natural lighting gives your artwork an air of authenticity that is hard to achieve in an indoor studio setting. In our first class, we will cover paint mixing, composition and positioning of canvas and paints. We will also cover the distinct differences of painting in a less controlled setting. Paint moves and sets up differently, the weather is a factor, and the great outdoors holds a series of happy accidents waiting for the plein air painter.
Based on the experience level and physical abilities of students, we will decide on a suitable location for our second session.

Part 2: Creating in Plein Air
- Part 1 Prerequisite
Tuesday, July 15th | 11 AM - 1 PM

location TBD during first class of series
Maximum 6 participants
All supplies provided
This class will be conducted completely outdoors. Each student will create their own masterpiece. We will touch on composition and lighting before starting and then get right to painting the scene. Each student will get individual instruction on choosing a scene and scale of their painting and instruction on creating perspective and color application. Participants may choose to show their work at a public Artists Reception at CORE Community Center on September 14th.

About Rita
Rita is a skilled oil painter with over 30 years of experience, specializing in plein air painting and large landscape works. She holds a degree in Fine Arts and a Master’s degree, and has exhibited her work extensively.

Rita’s background in fine art and outdoor painting brings a fresh perspective to students, encouraging them to connect with nature and translate that connection onto canvas.  Her two-part workshop will offer a hands-on opportunity for participants to learn outdoor painting techniques in a supportive environment.
